82211 - sonata for the ingenue
the academy is - about a girl

i'm not in love
this is not my heart
i'm not going to waste these words
about a girl

age first listened: fifteen.

this song is, according to my loyal mp3, most played, most loved, most rated. and it doesn't lie. i can't really put a finger on the appeal - the lyrics, definitely, because c'mon, how cool is a love song that the boy insists is NOT a love song? the beat is amazing. it's one of those songs that you just plug in your ears, stroll down the grocery aisle and ignore everything that's going on around you. not very wise to do, but very fun.

adele - chasing pavements

should i give up or should i just keep chasing pavements
even if it leads nowhere?
or would it be a waste even if i knew my place
should i leave it there?

age first listened: seventeen.

this song pretty much sums up how i'm feeling right now. at the brink of turning a new age, feeling nostalgic, heartsick, missing my childhood and cautious of what lies ahead at the crossroads. i know i'm not the first or the last to feel this way, but it's a comfort to know that others feel the same. adele always seems to know what words to put to an emotion.

jack's mannequin - swim

you gotta swim
and swim when it hurts
the whole world is watching
you haven't come this far
to fall off the earth

age first listened: eighteen.

i must admit, i wasn't fond of jack's mannequin before. every punk-rock the kids need their voice "we're different we know what you're feeling so buy our albums and be a rebel" band out there sounds the same. but this song hits the right chord. even if you've never gotten in a pool in your life, you'll understand what he's talking about.

eliza doolittle - rollerblades

see you with a broken string, tell me what you really mean,
do you know what you want?
while beating up on yesterday, i was on my rollerblades
rolling on moving on

age first listened: sixteen.

i think i put this in a mix already. it doesn't matter. the sentiment is there.

charlotte martin - redeemed

every tree has a root
and every girl her forbidden fruit and her demons
and the path i chose to go, a different girl so long ago
i had my reasons

age first listened: fourteen.

some songs hold the residue of whatever book i was reading when i first heard them. books and music are both important to me in that way. i can leave a story behind me, and then i can hear a song somewhere random - in the store, on the street, blaring out of someone's car - and it all comes back to me. for this one, i believe it was gossamer by lois lowry. very powerful, the type of story that gives you bruises and soft spots with one gentle touch. you can read and listen and see what i mean.

feist - i feel it all

i love you more
i love you more
i don't know what I knew before
but now I know I wanna win the war

this. woman. is. amazing. and that's a fact. listen. see for yourself. it has that right mix of indie, folksy twang that just hits the spot, especially during the summer.

frou frou - breathe in

and i'm high enough from all the waiting
to ride a wave on your inhaling
and I'm high enough from all the waiting
to ride a wave on your inhaling
because I love you
can't help but love you

age first listened: seventeen.

another of those dreamy, can't quite understand the lyrics but love it anyway, type of songs.

lenka - live like you're dying

take every moment, you know that you own them
it's all up to you to do whatever you choose
live like you're dying and never stop trying
it's all you can do, use what's been given to you

age first listened: sixteen.

lenka is one of those singers i didn't appreciate until a year after i first heard her song. the show is most definitely my favorite...well, right after heart skips a beat, but this song is pretty amazing too.

norah jones - turn me on

my poor heart
it's been so dark
since you've been gone
after all you're the one who turns me off
you're the only one who can turn me back on

age first listened: fourteen.

i love the slow, dreamy sound of this song.

priscilla ahn - dream

i was a little girl alone in my little world
who dreamed of a little home for me
i played pretend between the trees
and fed my houseguests bark and leaves
and laughed in my pretty bed of green

age first listened: eighteen.

this perfectly describes me as a child. i wish that i could go back to those days.

sixpence none the richer - don't dream it's over

now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
and I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

age first listened: ten (i think).

you know, i'm starting to sound redundant. i love this song. it makes me feel nostalgic. moving on.

switchfoot - stars

but when I look at the stars
when I look at the stars
when I look at the stars i see someone else
when I look at the stars
the stars
i feel like myself

age first listened: thirteen.

this is one of the few songs i can still thank radio disney for introducing me to. (and goodness, i'd never thought i'd say that.)

erin mccarley - blue suitcase

tell me how does it feel
to be so high above the clouds?
and tell me how does it feel
to be so high above the clouds?

age first listened: sixteen.

i love erin mccarley's voice. it's perfect for every season of the year.

keane - everybody's changing

so little time
try to understand that I'm
trying to make a move just to stay in the game
i try to stay awake and remember my name
but everybody's changing
and I don't feel the same

age first listened: sixteen.

so many things have changed for me since my previous year. friends have gotten married, others have passed away. nothing stays the same. i'm starting to realize that now.
